The Nocturnal Passage
Ink establishes the first register, while slate and ink alter its emotional temperature across the portrait surface. Together they establish a nocturnal passage. Layered passages make depth felt without breaking the flat authority of the surface. Visual weight is dispersed across the surface, asking the eye to move without a fixed resting point. The resulting tension between solitude and attachment gives the work its inward rhythm. The remaining ambiguity gives the surface its unusual psychological charge.
